What to Pack for China by Season

Pack for China's regional climate swings, rain, heat, altitude, temples, trains, and long walking days.

The packing principle

China is too large for one packing list. Pack by route cluster: northern cities, humid south, western altitude, tropical Hainan, winter northeast, or rainy mountain regions.

Always useful

  • Comfortable walking shoes.
  • Light layers.
  • Compact umbrella or rain shell.
  • Power bank.
  • Tissues and hand sanitizer.
  • Passport pouch.
  • Medication and prescriptions.
  • Offline copies of bookings and addresses.

Seasonal notes

  • Spring: variable temperatures, rain, pollen, excellent walking weather.
  • Summer: heat, humidity, thunderstorms, sun exposure, heavy crowds in school holidays.
  • Autumn: best all-round season for many regions; book popular routes early.
  • Winter: dry north, cold northeast, mild south, snow/ice routes need serious footwear.

Regional notes

  • Yunnan / Qinghai / Tibet gateways: altitude and UV can surprise you.
  • South China: humidity makes quick-dry clothing valuable.
  • North China winter: wind and dry air matter as much as temperature.
  • Mountains: weather changes fast; cable cars and trails may close.
  • Temples and heritage sites: modest layers are useful.

What not to overpack

Most daily items are easy to buy in cities. Do not overpack toiletries, basic clothes, or snacks at the cost of luggage flexibility. Save space for weather-specific gear and items tied to your health, payment, or documents.

Final check

Lay out your route by city and elevation, then check weather for each cluster three days before departure. A Shanghai packing list will not protect you on a windy Huangshan morning or a Harbin winter night.
