Domestic Flights vs. Bullet Trains
When does it make sense to fly instead of taking the train? A cost and time comparison.

Train or plane?
Use trains for dense eastern and central routes. Use flights for very long distances, western China, island routes, or when a train would consume a full day. The real comparison is door-to-door time, not timetable time.
When trains usually win
- City pairs under 5-6 hours by high-speed rail.
- Routes where both train stations are central.
- Trips with luggage you do not want to check.
- Weather-prone seasons when short-haul flights may delay.
- Routes where you can work, sleep, or watch scenery onboard.
When flights usually win
- Beijing or Shanghai to Xinjiang, Yunnan, Hainan, Tibet gateways, or far northeast China.
- Multi-region trips where a train would break the route.
- Tight itineraries with one high-value destination at the far end.
- Routes where the airport is closer than the rail station.
Airport friction
Domestic airports still require security buffers, passport checks, baggage rules, and transfer time. Add the ride to the airport, early arrival, delays, baggage collection, and ride from the destination airport before deciding a flight is faster.
Booking checklist
- Use your passport name exactly.
- Check baggage allowance before buying the cheapest fare.
- Keep the same passport used for booking.
- Save the terminal and airport name in Chinese.
- Avoid tight same-day scenic-area plans after a domestic flight.
Best pattern
Build the route around clusters. Use one domestic flight to jump between regions, then use rail and local transport inside each cluster.
