A City Frozen in Time
While most Chinese cities raced to modernize, Pingyao was too poor to rebuild. That accident of economics preserved what is now China’s most complete ancient walled city — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the original city walls, street grid, residences, shops, and temples from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368–1912) remain intact.
Walking through the South Gate feels like stepping into a time machine. The 6-kilometer-long city wall, built in 1370, still encircles the old town. Inside, 3,700 traditional courtyard houses (siheyuan) line narrow streets lit by red lanterns at dusk.
China’s Wall Street
Pingyao’s most surprising claim to fame: it was China’s financial capital from the 18th to early 20th century. The Rishengchang Draft Bank, founded here in 1823, was the world’s first draft banking institution — essentially inventing the wire transfer.
Visit the Rishengchang Museum to see the original vaults, account ledgers, and the ingenious coded messaging system the bank used to prevent forgery.
What to See
City Walls
Walk the 6-kilometer circuit atop the walls for bird’s-eye views of the tile-roofed cityscape. The watchtowers at each corner offer the best photo opportunities, especially at sunset.
Temple of the City God
One of China’s best-preserved Taoist temple complexes, with ceiling murals dating back 600 years depicting heaven, earth, and the underworld.
Ming-Qing Street
The central commercial street retains its original shopfronts. Today it mixes tourist shops with authentic local businesses — the beef jerky and Pingyao lacquerware make excellent souvenirs.
Getting There
Take the high-speed train from Taiyuan (40 minutes) or Xi’an (3 hours) to Pingyao Ancient City Station. The old town is a 15-minute taxi ride from the station.
